Chook Me!

Does this sound like an okay chicken & rice recipe for a slowcooker?

http://www.grouprecipes.com/76552/chicken-and-rice-in-the-crockpot.html i'm making it tonight for some people. i think. unless someone has a better chicken and rice slowcooker recipe! Oh I always use those creams! They're delicious! :) I don't ever use garlic salt - i usually sub in minced garlic or garlic powder instead. I know it's a horrible amount of sodium! However I DO use low sodium creams and Tyson chicken! Don't worry! I'm only 22, it's not going to any children! Just a few college students watching the Vikings game tonight! :) We're pretty healthy most of the time and basically live at the wellness center. This is just a splurge!

  1. Meh. First of all it has hella lotta salt. Are you kidding? Two kinds of condensced soups, garlic SALT, AND Lipton soup mix? This, to me, looks like a far healthier alternative: http://www.food.com/recipe/crock-pot-arroz-con-pollo-spanish-chicken-with-rice-84322
  2. It is actually 3 cans of condesned soup. One serving of that stuff aklomne is about 1/2 the sodium you should have a day. Then you have the liptons, you aree pretty much at a days worth in one serving, let alone if anyone has seconds. Then if you aren;t careful the chicken you are buying can have up to 180 mg of sodium per serving of chicken. One breast is usually 2 servings worth. Look for Tyson chicken that has only 40 mg of sodium per serving. If you decide to serve this then have Plenty of water as everyone will be parched. ***Instead put some chicken breasts in the slow cooker with some curry powder (about 1 ysp to a tbsp depending on your prefrencesa0, 1/2 an onion chaopped, and 1 jar of salsa (home made is even better and low sodium) Cook the breasts until tender. Remove breasts and stir in 1/2 cup sour cream. Serve over rice with the sour cream and salsa sauce ladled over the top. The recipe that I stated is best with any kind of bone in chicken but bonless breasts also work.
  3. yeah it does. it seems like an awful lot of soup though, but im sure it'll be yummy.
  4. Mjc. That is a load of sodium, I don't care what you say. The link the first contributor gave you is ten times much healthier and better than what your doing. Congratulations to Happiest in the Kitchen for pointing it out to you better and not as blunt as me. People like Happiest in the Kitchen, Sugar Pie, Captain, myself and others believe in cutting down the amount of sodium. Think of your children also, what YOUR serving them. But what do I know, I'm just on old geriatric with Alzheimer's.
  5. Like others have said; it's just 4 kinds of soup, each loaded with salt. Put the cut-up chicken in the slowcooker with salt, pepper, & spices. Pour chicken broth, or canned tomatoes over, enough to cover. Cover & cook on low for 4-6 hours; drain & save 2 cups of liquid. Combine chicken, broth, peas, olives, & 2 cups cooked rice. Cover & cook on high 20-30 minutes more.
  6. Agreed that there's a LOT of salt/sodium in those ingredients as well as fat (and a lack of other good nutrition including using *white* rice), so definitely not a "healthy" recipe. Also, chicken *breasts* can easily get overcooked in a slow cooker, compared to less-lean meats that have more fat and connective tissue like chicken legs/thighs, "roasts" of various kinds, etc. You might want to check out my answers to previous questions about cooking chicken, etc, in a slowcooker: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AonFqpn7Fl0DYOB._ZNYdzYAAAAA;_ylv=3?qid=20091017124004AASe3jT ...and perhaps about other ways to cook chicken to keep it moist (not overcooked) http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090614115430AAzxP84 And check out some of these healthier slowcooker chicken recipes if you really still want to use breasts: http://www.google.com/search?q=healthy+recipes+crockpot+chicken+breast ...or these healthy slowcooker recipes using legs/thighs: http://www.google.com/search?q=healthy+recipes+crockpot+chicken+legs+thighs
