How do i care for chickens and roosters?

Ok so on April fools day my parents received a little joke from some family members they now have a rooster and chicken clucking around their property. Well my parents being kind hearted want to do everything right and keep them but they have no idea how to raise chickens or roosters and what is needed to have a long healthy life. Please help because i have been put in charge of researching for them and i have no idea where to start (which is very odd because i research everything!! lol)

2. If they want to make sure the birds stay around then then need to get or build a coop and make a little yard to keep the birds confined at least part of the time. They can still let the rooster and hen (chicken is both) out but they need to a place to protect them from predators and bad weather. Google chicken coop to get some ideas. Urban chickens are becoming quite popular so there's now a market for upscale chicken coops...check Craigslist. As for feed, if they are allowed to roam around they will find everything they need, but if you want to keep them happy a little scratch, layer mix, and/or cracked corn will do it. Plus left overs from the house. Chickens go crazy over that stuff!.
