Chook Me!

Chickens- recipes, care, coop designs...?

I want to get a chicken. Like I said, I want to get A chicken. I have enough room for a run that is 14 feet x 12.5 feet. That's enough for one. I am also going to get a coop- enough room for nights and 1 chicken, it will have to be smaller to conserve warmth, so only 2 feet x 2 feet with a perch. I either want to get a Jersey Giant hen or a Silkie hen. I will pay LOTS of attention to it. In the morning I would let it out of the coop, then give it a big breakfast (during the summer and a small one during the winter). Then I would pet it a bit before I go to school. When I get home, I will do homework outside while petting it (unless its cold, then I'll make trips and visit it) and a small dinner (and a big one during the winter). I think I want to make my own feed. I need a recipe, though. If not I will get a feed (that's a last option). What am I forgetting? I need help though and what I'll need to research before getting it. PS I am getting it when I get the coop built and fence put up, so... SOON!!!

  1. They go great with noodles, onions, carrots, peas,....great for cold weather.
  2. Chickens are flock animals. A flock animal has a hard time functioning without its kind surrounding it. You are a visitor, not a flock member. If you truly love your pets, then you will not get one chicken. Your lots of attention will not be enough! Your run is a fine size. As for your coop, it is way too small! At least double it. If you are worried about heat the second chicken will cuddle with the first. You can also insulate the coop, or build it so it isn't very drafty. If you want to make your own feed you would want to work with a mixture of oats, wheat, barley, and some cracked corn. Maybe, add some sunflower seeds. Best wishes, Jamie/RhodeRunner
