Chook Me!

How can I build a chicken coop for under $250.00?

I have a dozen chickens and I'm wanting the coop to allow for laying eggs.

  1. Plain timberwood for the frame, chickenwire and dark timberwood for the main part, including a run, should cost less than 250 easily :)
  2. My dad converted our old outdoor wooden playhouse into a coop for the chickens lol! i'm sure you can get one second hand for real cheap, or alternatively just a shed, and he just used old rabbit hutches and stacked them up He also built a fence around part of the garden so that the chicken's can run outside without ruining the rest of garden as they can dig up EVERYTHING
  3. You can cut down on the cost of materials if you use some old doors which can be nailed together on their sides, this will make the run and add protection to the nesting area. Another good product to use is old corrugated tin sheets which you can fix together with copper wire from old electrical appliances. Tin sheets can be laid on edge and buried in the ground along their base edge, this will stop foxes, racoons and wombats from breaking in and stealing the eggs. Also you can use old fishing trawler nets if you live near a port, ths will act as a good canopy to stop your birds from escaping, or just ask a neibor if they have old nylon netting they don't want. Another great way to save on costs is to use wooden pallets which you can get from your builders store for free, they might even let you have cheap bricks as well.
