Do they really euthanize roosters to make feather extensions?

I've seen some articles online about roosters being killed for their feathers, which are being used as hair extensions etc. But I have yet to see any articles from more credible sources, like CNN etc. I would think that if this was true, it would be a much bigger story. I wonder if this is just an attempt by animal rights groups to get people riled up. It doesn't make sense to kill a rooster just to pluck a few feathers out of his rear end.

1. Euthanize means to kill something or someone because it is suffering. If it's just for the feathers it's not euthanasia.
