  1. rice and pasta don't cook well in a crock pot exactly because of that. I only use rice in the crock pot if I am home all day but busy, so I can keep an eye on things. chicken and rice hot dishes are generally better done in the oven for a lot less time.
  2. A whole chicken holds up the best in slow cooking methods. Sprinkle some seasonings (salt, pepper, garlic, rosemary) on and in the chicken, don't forget to remove the neck from the cavity. If you can chop up onions and throw them in the cavity, or if you have a lemon, punch holes in the lemon and stuff it into the chicken cavity (cook with lemon in it) and it will make a great fresh lemon chicken. Also root vegetables will do better then grains or pasta. If you try it again, substitute the rice with big chuck diced potatoes.
  3. I season and cook the chicken in the crock pot. When I get home, I pour off the liquid into a pan and cook the rice in that, it doesn't take very long and tastes great.
